Shahjahanpur records 175mm rain in 24 hours, crops face waterlogging threat

Shahjahanpur- Heavy rain continued to lash Shahjahanpur on Saturday, disrupting normal life and raising concerns over damage to standing crops. The district recorded around 175mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the weather department.

The intense spell began late on Thursday night and continued through Saturday, with several areas witnessing prolonged spells of rain. Weather officials said such heavy rainfall in September has been unusual, with historical records indicating a similar spell in 1986.

Meteorological scientist Dr Manmohan Singh said the wet conditions were likely to continue till Sunday evening. He said instances of such heavy rainfall in September were rare. The district had also recorded 224mm of rainfall on September 7, adding to the unusually wet conditions this month.

The persistent rain has resulted in waterlogging in agricultural fields, increasing the risk of crop damage. Paddy and sugarcane are among the crops likely to be affected by prolonged water accumulation, while mustard, vegetables, fruits and flowers could also suffer if the wet conditions continue.

Farmers have become increasingly concerned as water continues to accumulate in low-lying fields. Prolonged waterlogging can affect standing crops and make harvesting and other farm operations difficult.

The rain has also affected movement in urban areas, with several roads, lanes and drains inundated. Waterlogging in residential and commercial areas led to difficulties for commuters, particularly in low-lying localities.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast further rain in Shahjahanpur, with a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds on Saturday.
