Shahjahanpur: An undertrial prisoner lodged in the Shahjahanpur District Jail died by suicide after hanging himself inside the toilet of the court lockup on Friday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Deepak Kumar (also referred to as Dipak Kumar), who was lodged in Shahjahanpur District Jail in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

According to ASP Devendar Singh, the prisoner had been arrested on October 6 by the Kotwali Police. A police team was presenting him for his remand on Friday. During the court hearing, Deepak hanged himself inside the Kacheri prisoners’ lock-up.

A case has been registered at the Sadar Bazaar Police Station, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Authorities stated that the exact cause of death would be established after a thorough investigation.

The tragic incident has raised serious questions regarding security arrangements at the court lockup. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
