A man accused of shooting his wife’s alleged lover in a case linked to a suspected love affair was injured in a police encounter in Shahjahanpur district on Friday night, police said on Saturday. A police constable also sustained minor injuries during the exchange of fire.

According to Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit, the accused, identified as Avneesh Singh, had allegedly shot Amit Singh in the head near Topar village under Jalalabad police station limits on Wednesday. The victim is currently undergoing treatment in hospital in critical condition.

The police said that on Friday night, a team was conducting vehicle checks near the Ganga Expressway when a motorcyclist attempted to flee after noticing the police presence. The rider lost control and fell, after which he allegedly opened fire on the police team.

In the incident, constable Subham Saini suffered minor injuries. Police retaliated and shot the accused in the leg before overpowering and arresting him.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that he was enraged after learning of his wife’s alleged relationship with Amit Singh, which led him to commit the attack earlier on Wednesday.

The injured accused has been admitted to a hospital for treatment and further legal proceedings are underway, police added.
